Back When Slick Willie Was President

Tonight I did my last Insurgent Radio Kiosk. After nine years, I need a new challenge. It's funny to think of all the time that I spent there.

When I started, Clinton had just finished bombing Serbia and Fight Club was about to come out in the theaters. The next year was filled with campaigning and the coronation of the Shrub as the next president. I also remember the http://www.blogger.com/img/gl.link.gifthe build up to the WTO protests in Seattle. Things at the station seemed sunnier to me then, probably because it was new. I was physically at the station when the war broke out.

Nine years later, I've endured two terms of the worst president ever, done, to my estimation, 350 or so Wednesdays. I've done them on holidays, days when I was deathly sick, and when no one was able to come in. Tonight, Glen, the volunteer coordinator, got me a good grasshopper cake and Casey Fox gave me send off on the air. I felt appreciated.

But my time is done. On to the next thing.

Geesh, absinthe is good stuff.....

Life As It Has Been

So life lately has been a bit better. I have more energy and no ticks and shakes. Part of my energy comes from becoming a half-assed vegetarian again. I do eat fish, so scold me there. Come 2 pm, I don't fall asleep in my chair and com 9 pm, I'm not snoozing while watching a movie with you. All and all, a benefit.

Norwegian classes started up again. I have no one with which to speak Norwegian in the mean time, so I've started translating "Kurt Quo Vadis". It's slow going, since I have a VERY rudimentary understanding of Norwegian grammar, most of which is pilfered from my limited knowledge of German. Any which way, I've translated two paragraphs! In my defense, I was interrupted by a guest one night while working on it and distracted the next by making a call and watching "Hercules". Sue me.

We had a couple of strange applicants here at work lately. Last Saturday, Gert came into find a happy little snake curled up in front of her door. That did not make Gert happy and Al had to shoo it out. Yesterday, a itty bitty frog showed up close the same place. I walked out to take care of it and was told not to kill it. Me? I don't even kill spiders. They also told me not to feed it to my bearded dragon. So I grabbed the little guy and put him safely in the tall grass by the building. He tried to hop onto the pavement, but that would make for flat frog. I stopped that, at least for now.

I peaked at what tests Aasa has taken and found this one. I'm a 4 - The Individualist! One place I found to describe it talked all about my faults which made me feel just so happy. So I found this place. Makes sense to me.

Time

So all of....

the bars where I made a grove in the railing,
places I would hide and watch people walk by,
pop culture that was fresh at one time,
streets that I'd walk down every day,
haunts where I would feel comfortable,

are in the past.

On to the next thing.

Cynicism and Optimism

As I sit here listening to the mixed CDs that I made for Shari (they should be there by tomorrow), I'm stuck thinking of my oscillation between cheery, happy shit and pessimistic, downer shit. It's been more of the latter for the last couple of weeks. Not something that I understand.

I've shrugged off changes in my age for years, but for some reason 33 seems kind of old. Every few years, I get anxious and unhappy about my situation in life. I know what has been is over and have no idea what comes next. Its kind of like the discussion that Tyler and Jack have in the bathroom in "Fight Club". Dad says "Go to college, get a job, get married" as if there's some logical progression.

Logical progressions don't impress me.

Keren Ann

So the Keren Ann concert finally came and went. I bought the tickets a couple of months ago when they were first available and then counted down the days. I had eight tickets and changed in who was going to take them, but in the end I filled all eight of them with a little help.

I didn't care much for the space, but I think that was all to do with the uncomfortable chairs. Those, combined with hours of driving didn't make my back all too happy. Better than before, but a ways to go.

The concert was great and even better in retrospect. She played guitar with another Art Garfunkle-looking guy playing bass and guitar and another Pirates-eara Orlando Bloom-looking guy with a Borat "Kazakstan" shirt playing trumpet. Most of the time, he was playing into a microphone that was put through something to make it sound more electric. I don't know instruments, so don't ask me any more than that.

It also had the most laid back atmosphere for a show that I've seen. It felt more like a friend playing in college than anything else. I guess it helped that I had seven friends there.

Outside of that, it was good to get out of Dodge and see Michael, Shari and Sophie, as it always is. Now I'm back to work..... that's ok.

New Deli

I don't remember much, but I was in dream Saint Paul with a lot of shops, etc down by the river on the west side of the city. Supergrass had a new deli there and I wanted to go, so I did. They spoke with a lot of idioms that I didn't know. I think Frank was there.

Girl of My Dreams

Perhaps it is Wicked Annabella:

In a dark and misty house,
Where no Christian man has been,
Wicked Annabella mixes a brew
That no one's ever seen.

Relatives have passed her by,
Too scared to even say hello.
She's in perpetual midnight,
She shuts out the day,
And goes about her sinful ways.

I, I've seen her hair, I've seen her face,
Look towards mine.
I, I've felt her eyes burning my sole,
Twisting my mind.

Little children who are good
Should always go to sleep at night,
'Cause Wicked Annabella is up in the sky
Hopin' they will open their eyes.

Don't go into the woods tonight,
'Cause underneath the sticks and stones
Are lots of little demons enslaved by Annabella
Waiting just to carry you home

Now "I Want To Be Your Man" has popped up, which is strange since I'm heading to Minnesota tonight.

Down the Road with Linux

About a week ago my System76 computer arrived at my doorstep. I'm getting a bit fed up with the graft and bloat of Big Tech, so I'm...
